In the Torah this word is frequently used to point to the foundational aspect of something. For example, in Leviticus 6:13 (6:20 English) one reads, “This is the offering of Aaron and his sons…”. In other words, this passage teaches the primary aspect of the Kohanim, the priests. In the same verse this offering is called perpetual. This is the same term that is used for the daily Temple sacrifice. One might therefore assume that this sacrifice had to be offered daily by every individual priest. The difficulty is that this sacrifice was offered only once by each individual priest for the purpose of inaugurating his service. The Kohanim served on a rotation basis twice a year and during the festivals, and therefore could not offer this sacrifice each day.

In reality, it was the Kohan HaGadol, the High Priest, who offered this sacrifice daily in the Temple. According to tradition, the regular Kohanim were to reflect upon this offering twice each day, in the morning and in the evening, when the Kohan HaGadol presented it. This passage refers to the Kohan HaGadol in a very significant way. In verse 15 (22 English) he is literally called the Kohan HaMashiach, the Priest, the Anointed One.

The message for us today is that we must remember what Messiah Yeshua has done for us by offering Himself on our behalf. As we learned last week, this sacrifice is eternally sufficient. It is significant that the sacrifice which the High Priest offered daily is called a sin offering. The wording is important, for the Torah states, “This is the law of the sin offering”.

Once again, the use of the word “this” is meaningful, because it teaches that the primary work of the Kohanim is to make atonement for sin, and this is exactly what Yeshua, our Messiah, has done on our behalf.

In de Torahlezing van deze week komt een belangrijk woord voor: het woord is eenvoudigweg “dit”.
