In this week\u2019s Torah portion, Moses ascends Mount Sinai once again in order to receive the second set of Tablets. He remained on the mountain for forty days and forty nights, and we are told that he did not eat bread nor drink water, see Exodus 34:28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This closely parallels what we read concerning Yeshua. He too was tempted in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights, during which He neither ate nor drank, see Matthew 4:2 and Luke 4:2. What is the connection between these two events?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The number forty appears numerous times in Scripture and is associated with transition and change. When Moses received the Torah and descended to the people in order to give them this revelation from G-d, it represented a new phase for the Children of Israel. By means of the Torah, they would now know the will of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During those forty days of temptation, Yeshua demonstrated that He had overcome the temptation of Satan. This was foundational for achieving victory and salvation for humanity. What did Yeshua use in resisting this satanic temptation? The answer is the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Although the commandments themselves do not produce the victory, they are related to the victorious lifestyle of the one who has overcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition to the forty days and forty nights, there is another similarity: neither Moses nor Yeshua ate during this period. What is the significance of this fasting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fasting relates to the denying of self and to relying upon G-d. This reliance is rooted in trusting HaShem for supernatural provision rather than depending upon the natural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The message of this week\u2019s Parashah is that one cannot truly receive the Torah, that is, the will of G-d, by means of the flesh. Only when one approaches G-d in faith and in dependence upon Him is he given the ability to receive and fulfill the Word of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This section concludes with the people observing that Moses\u2019 face had become radiant, reflecting the glory of G-d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Would it not be fitting that others should see the glory of G-d radiating from believers as a result of our obedience to Scriptural truth?<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
