In this week\u2019s Torah portion, a variety of laws are given. These commandments are intended to regulate a community and ensure that justice is maintained. In the midst of these laws, we read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou shall not lift up a vain report\u2026\u201d
Exodus 23:1<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nearly all English translations render the Hebrew word \u05e9\u05d5\u05d0 as \u201cfalse.\u201d While there is certainly evidence to support that translation, the Even Shoshan Dictionary also includes additional meanings such as \u201cvain,\u201d \u201cempty,\u201d \u201cwithout benefit,\u201d and \u201cwithout necessity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The point that needs to be emphasized is this: a report does not necessarily have to be false in order to fall into the category of something that one should neither receive nor repeat. A definition such as \u201ca report that does not serve any edifying purpose\u201d more accurately captures the intent of the verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A passage that aligns closely with the message of Exodus 23 is found in Ephesians:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLet no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for edification, as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear.\u201d
Ephesians 4:29<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Unfortunately, people often speak words that do not serve any constructive purpose. As believers, we cannot control what others say; however, we are responsible not to internalize such words or pass them on to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When someone makes an unnecessary remark about another person, that is, a statement that serves no true purpose and brings no edification to the listener or to the one being spoken about, it is wise to gently interrupt and kindly express that you prefer not to hear such reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is significant that Exodus states, \u201cDo not lift up a vain report.\u201d The Hebrew expression \u201clift up\u201d teaches two important lessons. First, do not give credibility to such a report. Second, do not carry it to another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Remember that such a report is \u201cvain,\u201d \u201cempty,\u201d and \u201cwithout benefit or purpose.\u201d Too often we invest time, attention, and energy in matters that do not edify, rather than focusing on those things that strengthen faith and build one another up.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
